Popular culture attributes a large number of reasons to mood swings and other symptoms of hormonal imbalance in women, but very few people are sensitive towards how big a problem it is. Often women are much more prone to suffer from depression than men and mood swings are one of the first symptoms. Careful research is thus needed for understanding the relationship between hormones and changing states of mood.
Hormones are chemicals in our body that control complex bodily functions like metabolic, growth and development, sexual abilities, reproduction and behaviour. Some of the suggested things include avoiding high omega-6 polyunsaturated fats like vegetable oil, peanut oil and soybean oil, reducing caffeine intake and avoiding toxins in plastics pesticides etc. which come into your body through non-organic food. Light exercise and coconut oil is known to help in stabilizing hormone levels.
Estrogen, a very important hormone, controls the production of another hormone called serotonin which regulates mood. Any drastic increase or decrease in estrogen levels in the body affects the mood of the person. Increased estrogen levels results in increased serotonin levels which makes the mind very sensitive to emotions. Slightest of emotions evoke sharp reactions from the person, which is characterized as mood swings. Estrogen also impacts mood through beta-endorphins which cause positive mood states. Decreased estrogen levels often cause panic attacks and women resulting in other problems like depression and anxiety. Many women ultimately end up taking antidepressant medication due to delayed diagnosis of this problem. Some of the symptoms of low estrogen include depression, headaches, urine leakage, memory flashes, sleep disorders etc. Too much estrogen is characterized by heavy bleeding, fibrocystic breasts and increased premenstrual symptoms.
Research has clearly shown that estrogen has powerful impact on the reproductive abilities and control. This fact has led to large amount of research in unearthing ways to treat mood disturbances using estrogen, which is particularly severe during important perimenopausal, postmenopausal and postpartum depression. As more understanding develops about the interrelationship between estrogen, serotonin and physical effects, we can better understand what causes hormone imbalance symptoms and its consequent effects like mood swings.
